Eyebrow Transplantation
Eyebrow transplantation follows the same principles as a hair transplant. It involves taking hair follicles from a healthy donor area at the back of scalp and implanting them into the eyebrow transplant region. The transplanted hairs have a thickness and growth pattern similar to original hair, which means they will require regular trimming after the procedure.
Why is eyebrow transplantation more complicated?
Eyebrow transplantation is a meticulous process that demands the expertise and precision of the doctor. From designing the shape of the eyebrows to determining the orientation of each hair, every detail is crucial.
The key to achieving virtual-looking eyebrows is the correct direction in which the hairs are placed; improper placement can significantly alter a person’s facial appearance. Additionally, advanced technology, such as the hair follicle extraction machine , is necessary for the procedure. As a result, an eyebrow transplant is regarded as a highly skilled treatment that blends science and artistry.

KEY Point for Eyebrow transplantation
Because eyebrows are often considered the crown of the face, an eyebrow transplant is a highly meticulous procedure.
Three Important Points to Consider Before Undergoing an Eyebrow Transplant:
1. Hair extraction Technology
2. The design of eyebrow shape
3. The direction of the eyebrow
Hair extraction Technology
In the eyebrow transplant procedure, it is essential to remove hair follicles from the nape of the neck using the latest innovative machines. Kesa has acquired the newest hair follicle extraction machines , including Trivellini, Dr. UGraft, and GraMax, which are well-known in the hair transplant industry and imported from abroad. These hair follicle extraction machines are recognized for their innovation, as they effectively penetrate the hair roots to create high-quality grafts. This advanced technique results in the highest graft survival rate.

Eyebrow shape design
Doctors design individual eyebrow shapes, emphasizing shape that matches the patient’s face, gender, and age. The eyebrow shape, arch, and length must be in proportion to the anatomy eyebrows (Golden Ration). Men and women’s eyebrows are designed differently. Importantly, eyebrow blocks should not be used to design the eyebrow frame, as they cannot meet the needs of every face shape.

Eyebrow direction
- The grafts obtained must be surgically trimmed by a team of highly experienced doctors to ensure that each is reduced to a single hair. This mimics the appearance of human single hairs in the eyebrow area, providing the most realistic results. If a large clump of hair is transplanted into the eyebrows, it can make them look excessively thick and unnatural.
- Once the grafts are the appropriate size, the doctor will allocate grafts with varying curvatures to different areas of the eyebrow line. Each eyebrow has its own unique direction and curvature, and without careful attention to these details, the transplanted hairs can end up tangled and misshapen.
- It’s important to note that eyebrow shapes differ in direction; for instance, Asian and European eyebrows have different orientations at the brow spine. Therefore, the surgeon performing the transplant must possess high expertise in placing each graft accurately according to the designed eyebrow shape. Thus, direction is crucial in eyebrow transplantation.

“Eyebrow transplantation requires the use of long hair grafts to accurately determine the correct direction of the eyebrows. If short hair grafts are used, the direction of the hair may not be clear when it grows out long, which can result in eyebrows that point outward instead of maintaining their intended shape.”

Eyebrow Transplant vs Eyebrow Tattoo
- A single eyebrow transplant can last a lifetime, making it a worthwhile investment. Eyebrow transplantation creates a virtual appearance by mimicking real hair, which prevents it from looking fake.
- In men, eyebrow tattooing often results in unnatural outcomes because it involves drawing lines instead of replicating real hairs. Since men typically do not wear makeup to cover their eyebrows, these tattoos are more noticeable. In contrast, eyebrow tattooing in women tends to produce more natural results, as women often use makeup to define their eyebrows.
- Additionally, eyebrow tattooing requires touch-ups every 3 to 5 years. This entails removing the old tattoo before applying a new one, leading to ongoing costs. If a low-quality removal method is used, it may result in the loss of actual eyebrow hairs.
- Using low-quality tattoo ink, such as those with iron oxide, can lead to the eyebrow color turning red over time. Furthermore, if ink containing titanium is used, it becomes nearly impossible to remove the tattoo altogether.
- Another issue is that if the tattoo is applied too deeply, the lines can blur, resulting in an unnatural appearance in the long run.

Preparing for eyebrow transplant
Before eyebrow transplantation
- If you are taking regular medications, always inform your doctor so that they can consider stopping some of them before having your eyebrows transplanted
- Stop taking vitamin supplements such as fish oil, ginkgo, vitamin E, ginseng, and garlic 1 month before hair transplant
- Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking 2 weeks prior to eyebrow transplant
Steps of eyebrow transplantation
Step 1: Eyebrow design
- The doctor designs the eyebrow line together with the patient, based on the principle of virtual shape, and is most suitable for the patient’s facial structure, gender, age, and needs
- Measure the area and calculate the graphs required for eyebrow planting
Step 2: Prepare before eyebrow planting
- Wash your hair and cleanse your scalp with an antibacterial solution
Step 3: Drill the hair roots at the back
- The doctor will inject local anesthesia into the area where the hair roots will be transplanted
- Drill the hair roots with a special hair root drill that can drill long hair roots. Use a small drill head of 0.6-0.8 millimeters, drill evenly, making the wound small, smooth, and recover quickly. It takes about 2-3 hours, depending on the number of grafts
Step 4: Graph cutting under a microscope by the medical team
- The grafts are decorated by a team of highly experienced doctors. All grafts used in eyebrow transplantation must be trimmed to be a single hair (1 hair) to imitate the hairs in the eyebrow area which are single hairs. Single hairs will give the most virtual results. If large clumps of hair are used, such as 2-3 strands per clump, the eyebrows will look thick and unnatural
Step 5 Eyebrow Planting Process
- The doctor will inject local anesthesia into the area where the eyebrows will be transplanted
- Plant hair strand by strand, placing it in the same direction as the original eyebrow line and adjusting the angle of the eyebrow line to look as virtual as possible, strand by strand
Step 6: Preparation before returning home
- Cover the wound on the back and wear the black cap provided by the clinic to protect the wound from dust
- The doctor gave detailed advice on what to do after the hair transplant
- After eyebrow transplantation, you may feel slightly drowsy. For the return trip, it is recommended that a relative pick you up or the clinic call a taxi for you
Day of eyebrow transplantation
- Eat breakfast as usual, except for caffeinated drinks
- Wash and blow dry your hair before coming to the clinic
- Wear a button-down shirt
- Arrive at the clinic at least 15 minutes before the appointment time
- See the doctor to re-establish the exact eyebrow line
- Get a haircut before receiving the service
- Get anesthesia injections, eyebrow transplantation takes about 4-6 hours
- After eyebrow transplantation, you should not drive yourself back. You should call a TAXI or have a driver
After eyebrow transplantation
- Sleeping after eyebrow transplantation: You should sleep on your back, do not sleep on your stomach/side. When sleeping, you should use a rolled-up towel under your neck under the elastic bandage on your head to support the wound so that it does not touch the pillow and sleep with your head slightly elevated
- After 2 weeks, you can sleep normally. You should not bend your head down to pick up things or put on shoes.
- If there is a lot of bleeding at the eyebrow transplant site, the graft may fall out. Use a clean gauze to press on the bleeding area for 3-5 minutes. If it does not stop, press again for another 5-10 minutes. If it does not stop, call your doctor or nurse.
- After eyebrow transplantation, you may experience swelling in the upper eyelid area. However, the swelling is usually not severe and will disappear within 5 days. If swelling occurs, use a cold pack to apply to the swollen area. Avoid touching the hair cell area (graft).
- If itching occurs, do not scratch or pick at the area. You can rub gently, apply a cold compress, wash your hair, or take anti-itch medication.
- Do not drink any alcoholic beverages for 48 hours.
- Avoid hot weather and sunlight for the first week after surgery. If you must be outdoors, wear a hat to protect yourself from the sun.
- Avoid strenuous exercise/swimming/sauna for 1 month.
- During the first 2 weeks after eyebrow transplantation, be careful not to touch the transplanted area and be careful not to hit the eyebrows with any hard objects.
- Eyebrow trimming can begin 14 days after surgery.

Cleaning step after eyebrow transplantation
- Clean the planting area with salt water for 1 week.
- After 1 week, use facial foam to lather and gently pat the area where the eyebrows were planted with your fingertips. Do not rub and leave for 1-2 minutes. Rinse with water carefully. Pat gently with a clean cloth. Do not rub.
- After 2 weeks, apply coconut oil and leave it on for 30 minutes, then gently rub off the scales.
- After 2 weeks of eyebrow transplant, start rubbing gently on the transplanted area. In the 3rd week, start rubbing harder and wash your face normally after 1 month.

Symptoms after eyebrow transplantation
- Scab
The wound will dry and scab over within 2-3 days. During this period, the wound will look darker than usual and the scab will gradually fall off within 1-2 weeks. - acne
Acne may occur in the area where the eyebrows were transplanted and on the back of the head. This is caused by inflammation and blockage of the pores. Use acne medication. If the acne is large and inflamed, you can puncture it with a needle and apply the medication. It is recommended to wash your hair every day and avoid excessive sweating. - Redness
The redness of the eyebrows in the area where the hair was transplanted will gradually fade within 2-3 weeks, but in some cases it may take longer than 2-3 months. The wounds in the nape of the neck will gradually fade in color and will return to normal in 6 months. - Numbness and tingling sensations in the scalp
It is caused by nerve damage during the procedure. The numbness and tingling pain will disappear within 6 months. - Shock loss
The hair that is transplanted around the eyebrows and some hair around the nape of the neck will fall out. The hair will grow back in the 3rd-4th month.
